Ollie's Big Boy Room Update

There’s something really special about designing a “big boy” room—it’s that in-between moment where a space starts to feel a little more grown up, but still holds onto all the warmth and imagination of childhood.

Ollie’s room is exactly that.

This design is rooted in a rich, moody palette with layers of texture and playful details woven throughout. The deep green backdrop sets the tone—cozy, grounded, and a little bit adventurous—while the mix of patterns and materials keeps it from feeling too serious.

The Vision

The goal for this space was to create a room that could grow with him. Something that feels styled and intentional now, but won’t need to be completely reimagined in a year or two.

It’s a balance of:

  • Classic + playful

  • Structured + soft

  • Timeless + a little unexpected

Key Design Elements

A Deep, Moody FoundationThe dark green walls instantly make the space feel cozy and cocooned. It gives everything else—like the warm gold drapery and bold red accent—a chance to really stand out.

Pattern Play (Done Right)From the gingham to the cheetah print, this room layers pattern in a way that feels collected rather than overwhelming. Keeping everything within a cohesive color story helps it all work together seamlessly.

Statement Bed MomentThe black spindle bed anchors the room and adds that classic, slightly vintage feel. It’s structured enough to balance out the more playful elements happening around it.

A Pop of RedThe red nightstand is such a fun, unexpected detail. It adds energy and personality without taking over the space—just enough to keep things interesting.

Adventure-Inspired DetailsThe “Explore” flag brings in that sense of curiosity and imagination that feels perfect for this stage. It subtly encourages play, storytelling, and a little bit of adventure.

Why This Works

What I love most about this space is that it doesn’t feel overly themed. It hints at personality instead of spelling it out.

That’s the difference between a room that feels styled for now… and one that actually grows with your child.

This design gives Ollie a space that feels:

  • Comfortable enough for everyday routines

  • Playful enough for imagination

  • Elevated enough to evolve over time

Final Thoughts

Designing kids’ spaces doesn’t have to mean sacrificing style. In fact, some of the most interesting rooms come from mixing structure with a little bit of fun.

Ollie’s big boy room is just the beginning—but it already feels like a space he can grow into, not out of.

And honestly… I might be a little obsessed with this one.
